Beginning as a Documentation and Resource Centre in 1999, registered as a Society and has been working as a developmental organization since 1999. Sangama works for the rights of the economically disadvantaged, non-English speaking gender and sexual minorities, sex workers, and people living with HIV since 1999. In the past Sangama has also worked for the wellbeing of people who inject drugs.
Sangama’s focus is on promoting and defending the rights of these marginalized communities, especially those who are economically disadvantaged Sangama’s work from its inception has been primarily in addressing rampant human-rights violations against these communities, especially those who face multiple oppressions at the intersection of gender identity, sexual orientation, occupation, economic status, et al. The human rights issues include the use of unjust criminal laws, police and/or criminal gang violence, family violence, social rejection, discrimination and the lack of access to healthcare, education, housing, and employment.
We aim to improve and increase the discourse on gender identity, sexual orientation, sex work, HIV status, sexual health and health in general as a human and fundamental right, and link it to other social, political, and development issues and movements in India.
